Round-Up Community Funding (9-04)
Date of Project: 09-2004
Name of Coalition: Fairmont Early Childhood Initiative
MIF: Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation,
Project Overview: Round Up Funding - A method of funding the Early Childhood Initiative projects. A privately owned Rural Electric Company in the area uses "Round-Up" fundraising to make grants back to the area. All customers' utility bills are rounded up to the nearest dollar, unless they request not to be included. The extra funds collected are then used for area grants decided on by a board of directors. Our committee approached our local utility provider - the City of Fairmont - to see if a similar program could be implemented. The request was denied because this is a city-owned utility instead of a privately owned business and the City felt it could not support just one group when several would also want some of the funding available.
