501c3 Status (4-06)

Date of Project: 04/06

Name of Coalition: Mesabi East Early Childhood Coalition

MIF: Northland Foundation,

Project Overview: In order to become a nonprofit agency, a 501(c)(3), you must simply draft some bylaws, (Hermantown/Proctor Early Childhood Coalition's are the sample we used to help us with ours) elect officers, and have the names and addresses of the officers on file. Bring these to an accountant and ask to file. The fee for the accountant is around $300 and the state has more than one level of nonprofit status, for ours it was a fee of $150 because we kept it at a low level.

Cost of Project:

# of Children 0-5 Served: 0

Lessons Learned/Outcomes: Why become a nonprofit? Well, many grants you will write for require a nonprofit status to award funds. This way when you are official you can work independently from the school district or other fiscal agent and manage yourselves. City Chambers of Commerce are one example of groups who can donate to a nonprofit.
