Candidate Forum

Date of Project: 2007

Name of Coalition: Princeton Area Early Childhood Coalition

MIF: Initiative Foundation,

Project Overview: Our Coalition is co-sponsoring a Candidate Forum on October 23, 2006, for candidates for the open Congressional seat in our area (District 6) as well as for MN Legislative candidates from District 16. Our co-sponsors are Community Education – Princeton Schools, the Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce, Ready 4 K, and the MN Children’s Platform Coalition in partnership with Every Child Matters in MN. In addition to the forum itself, features of the event include a half-hour networking time with refreshments prior to the forum and free on-site child care.

Cost of Project:

# of Children 0-5 Served: 0

# of Children 6-18 Served: 0

# of Adults Served: 0

# Families Served: 0

Lessons Learned/Outcomes: The focus of the forum will be (1) economic prosperity in our area of central MN and (2) education from birth to grade 12. Questions posed to candidates will be very specific and aimed at helping voters understand what each candidate would propose to promote economic health in our area, support parents to provide for the needs of their families, and ensure that all children are ready to learn by the time they enter kindergarten. Our intent is to raise issues related to early care and education, attract voters who care about these issues, and help those voters determine which candidates are likely to support our early care and education agenda if elected. As part of a larger strategy, this forum will keep early care and education issues on the community’s “radar screen,” encourage local advocacy for early care and education, and prepare voters to use their voting power to make early care and education a statewide priority.
